Vergil Ortiz and Jaron Ennis traded words with one another in the middle of the ring following Ortiz’s quick dispatch of Erickson Lubin as he retained his interim title.
Coming into this weekend, Vergil Ortiz and Erickson Lubin were set to deliver a fight for the ages, with two tough and experienced fighters battling it out for the WBC junior middleweight interim title.
However, Ortiz made light work of Lubin, obliterating the championship contender in only two rounds.
When the bell rang to begin the bout, we saw a relatively cagey affair in the first round, with neither fighter stamping their authority on the fight just yet.
Lubin had brief moments of success, establishing his jab early; however, he remained on the back foot as Ortiz relentlessly marched him down.
Ortiz finished the round strongly, trapping Lubin in the corner before unleashing a measured attack and then returning to his corner.
Robert Garcia, Ortiz’s trainer, was quick to remind him that there was plenty of time to work by repeating, “We’ve got rounds.”
Ortiz continued in the second round as he had in the first. Acting as the aggressor, he walked down Lubin and once again had him pinned against the ropes.
Lubin maintained a tight earmuff defense, firing back only a few half-hearted straight shots before covering up again.
With Lubin trapped against the ropes, Ortiz threw a series of hard, looping right hands over his guard, but it was a guard pull followed by that same right hand that truly hurt Lubin.
Sensing blood, Ortiz capitalized. As Lubin’s tight guard went limp, Ortiz followed up with three devastating left hooks, leaving Lubin out cold held up only by the ropes.
Referee James Green quickly dived in to prevent the unconscious Lubin from taking any further damage, as an ecstatic Ortiz pounded his chest and roared while climbing to the top of the ropes.
As Ortiz concluded his post-fight interview, he called forward former lineal welterweight champion Jaron Ennis.
The pair exchanged words in the middle of the ring, with Ennis exuding confidence as he said, “We can bet any amount of money, I guarantee you that I’m going to win.”
The two are now set to meet in one of the biggest fights in the sport, with the event being targeted by DAZN for February 2026 in Las Vegas
